“Despite the increase in world attention toward Sudan in the past months, the genocide in Darfur has continued without any serious attempt by the Sudanese government to do what governments primarily exist to do, protect their citizens.” -Tom Allen
I am at a loss for why we exist in a world of humanitarian crisis. Isnt it our reponsibility as a species to protect eachother from harm and to love eachother? Or at the very least isnt it our responsibility to be civil to one another and not turn a blind eye to harm and evil? Since February 2003 there have been at least 400,000 people killed in the Darfurian conflict and at least 2.5 million displaced. What kind of world do we live in where Britney Spears and Michael Jackson are the most important news, and people all around us have no idea where Darfur is or what the word genocide means? Innocent Darfurians are attacked, raped, murdered, and displaced, while we sit back and ignore. I think everyone has a personal responsibitity to take notice of humanitarian catastrophe and to advocate on behalf of others who cannot speak for themselves.
“The world is a dangerous place, not because of those who do evil, but because of those who look on and do nothing.”
Im thoroughly excited about the upcoming year for STAND at UNC Charlotte because we have so much potential in new leaders and members and an abundance of passion towards the cause. This year I want to do as much as we can to make a significant difference in this tragedy of Genocide in Africa.
